happiness | a mixed med{ium} art journal page by Dale Ann Cubbage

Happy Saturday everyone!  I don’t know about you, but I’m so glad it’s the weekend!  That’s the time I get to spend at my desk playing and creating the most!  I love this layout I have for you today, and I hope it inspires you to get creative and paint and play sometime this weekend!  Take time to express yourself, you deserve it!

a mixed med{ium} art journal page

Okay, so I’m calling this a mixed “med{ium},” page, as opposed to a mixed media page, because I’ve layered on the Haute Mess paints and THREE Haute Mess Mediums, combining all of them to get that grungy texture that we all love so much!  This page has it all, and I smile everytime I look at it! I hope it has the same effect on you!

Wanna know what makes me happy when I’m creating art?  COLOR!  I love all the colors!  I played with some different colors this time around, and I love the results!

I have used one of my faves, Drop Dead Gorgeous, which is a delicious teal blue color.  For my contrast colors I have used Bad & Tatted and some White Gesso.  However, the star of this page is that happy yellow we call Caution Tape!  It’s like sunshine in a jar!  I love how that yellow makes the sweet stitching on this card stock page just pop off the page!

And don’t get me started on those tiny flowers!!  I created those with some air dry clay in a mold, then I painted them in the Caution Tape. I filled in their little centers with a black gel pen.  You will also see some doodles across the page that I drew with a white gel pen.

texture, texture, texture

I’ve already mentioned one of the Haute Mess Mediums used here, the White Gesso, which I love to spread around to create space for the eye to rest. In addition to that I layered on the Matte Gel Medium to protect surfaces as I went. I like to do that in case I make a move I regret! When that happens, I can just remove the mistake with a clean baby wipe! It also keeps my pen doodles from smearing.

The third medium I used was our amazing Glass Bead Gel. This stuff is pure magic! I love the texture it creates anywhere I spread it on!

I’ve added some paper elements to my page, and used several stencils and washi tape to add more texture and depth to my page.

I really love how my Paper Doll Palace  art journal is filling up!  This journal is unique in so many ways! One of my favorite features is that it can grow with my art!  Not only can I add more pages to it if I want, but it expands to accommodate my chunky and dimensional elements I like to use in my work!  My fun little flowers wont get smushed or broken in this journal. It allows me to be fearless and create whatever kind of pages my creative little heart desires!

Well, that’s it for me today! I hope you’ve enjoyed this little glimpse into my creative world.  Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to check out the store, where you can play and build your own Haute Mess Art Journal, just the way you want it!

Wishing You Happy Days, Dale Ann
