REPURPOSE those book covers!

I hope you gals have a few old books or book covers laying around because trust me…you are gonna WANNA make this!

I have recently gotten a love (perhaps obsession) of making art journals!  And this one was no exception.  I just loved the process of making it and know that I will love creating in it.

So I started out with an old book cover and since I didn’t have the entire book to make the back as well I used a piece of cardboard cut down to the same size.  I also gathered some other supplies like some canvas pieces to make the pages as well as some twine for binding it all together.  For the inside cover I used some of the patterned paper from the kit and I backed the back of the book with solid black paper.

I applied the patterned paper to the inside of the front and back covers then painted a thin coat of Bad Girls gesso and wiped it off with a baby wipe before it dried to give it an old streaky, whitewash effect.  Once dried it inked them both up well.

Then I moved on to the pages, I gave them a good heavy coat of gesso on the pages, leaving some pages with none so it leaves me art options when I go to use my journal.

Then I took a wide strip of the same canvas fabric and sewed along the edges for a finished look and attached the front and back cover on the inside to create the spine.

I bound all the pages in the cover by grouping them into sections (3 sections in all) and punching holes in the spines of the pages as well as in the spine of the binding cloth.  I used some jute twine to string them all together and bind them into the cover.

I used some corrugated cardboard and an old house charm to embellish the front cover and hold it all together with a band I created by running one of the enamel charms from the kit through a piece of black elastic and tying it together.

Now go look through your book collection and make you a cool journal!
