Reuse & Repurpose an Old Board Book Into an Art Journal

Hi all you crafty people! Dale Ann here on Thursday for a Girl With a Repurpose post for you!  Today I am working with this adorable vintage children’s board book that I found at GoodWill.  I think I picked it up for $1.37!

What drew me to it was it’s shape and size.  It is tall and skinny!  If I had to guess dimensions I would say it’s probably 12×6.

So when you open it up, it’s a perfect square!

The first thing I did was apply some of the Haute Mess Gesso to the whole surface. (Sorry, didn’t get a picture of that.)  Then I collaged some scraps of under papers and some pieces from an old book laying on my desk onto it.

It already has some cool colors and grungey texture on this first layer!  Then I covered the whole thing with a layer of the Haute Mess Matte Gel medium to seal it and make sure it’s stuck down really well!   Next, I started putting down some paint. This color is called, “First Crush,” and it’s from the Haute Mess paint collection available in the store now!

Then for the next layers I scraped some paint through some of my favorite stencils. The colors used in these pictures are, “Drama Queen” “Drop Dead Gorgeous” and “Hippie in High Heels.”  I think the names of the paints are half the fun, don’t you?

I added some dark contrast with some, “Bad & Tatted,” on some bubble wrap as a stamp . . .

. .  and a few pieces of washi tape from my vast collection.

My next step was to scrape some Haute Mess Molding Paste through a stencil to get those cool, raised circles. Be sure to let that layer dry really well! It gives the most awesome texture!  Then I sprayed on a spritz or two of some Dylusions Shimmer Spray in Bubble Gum Pink, and let it run down over the pages, for another pop of color.

Then I added some more Molding Paste through a flower stencil on top of the ink.  For some more contrast I added some more “Bad & Tatted,” paint to the middle of the flower and then scraped some across the page for some more grunge!

You’ll see in this final photo that I painted on the word, “Faith,” in that same color and used my Signo Uni-Ball Gel pen in white to add some doodles around.

Thanks so much for following along with me today! I hope I gave you some inspiration and creative ideas on how you can reuse and repurpose some of your trash to arty treasures!  Til’ next time!
